Bio-OS Workshop

Bio-OS is a platform that is developed by i-DAT and it explores the dynamic manifestation of information that is received in real-time from various sensors installed in a biological organism (such as the human body). This philosophical and technological framework tries to identify how this practice can be be used practically, artistically, and socially, and raises issues concerning the pervasiveness, and transparency of new technologies and sensor interfaces. At some cases it seems important to understand how a body functions, how to study it, how to make it perform better, and how we can identify if there is a problem or not. It looks to me as if we are given a Google Analytics function for our own bodies. We can study the performance in time, we can identify parameters that are important to our health, and we are able to connect these results in our digital and virtual avatars. The problem that is raised however, is who is going to have access to these data, and the practical/commercial applications that are going to be further developed. During this presentation all these issues were discussed and analyzed thoroughly from artists, scientists, programmers, philosophers, and media theorists. Also, there were presented various applications that have used already the prototype - live gaming, data analysis for art practices, sonification and visualization, e-health, and real-time scripting of media works.

Confluence Workshop

"Confluence is a new arts, technology and environment project being delivered by partners Beaford Arts, the North Devon Biosphere Foundation, Appledore Arts and University of Plymouth’s i-DAT (Institute of Digital Arts and Technology)", (http://x2.i-dat.org/confluence). The project involves aspects of environmental consciousness and discovery, active participation, data measurement, and artistic interpretations. In a wide outdoor area specific wireless sensor interfaces (ECOIDs) will be implemented in order to take frequent snapshots of environmental data (such as humidity, temperature, light, and so on). The data will be recorded for a very long period in i-DAT and they will be explored from various artists for translation into art forms. For the demands of this installation a workshop was provided by the i-DAT members that explored various issues of programming in Processing language, a fundamental analysis of the ECOIDs, and other issues concerning aesthetics, environmental opportunities and approaches, as well as media art design and technology.

AFU Installation

Αυτή η εγκατάσταση περιλαμβάνει τη δημιουργία μιας διαδραστικής εφαρμογής που βασίζεται στην ανάλυση της παρουσίας και κίνησης περαστικών έξω από τη βιτρίνα του καταστήματος AFU. Μια κάμερα εντοπίζει τη παρουσία των περαστικών και ένα σύστημα υπολογιστικής όρασης εντοπίζει συγκεκριμένα δεδομένα, που στη συνέχεια χρησιμοποιούντε για τη μεταμόρφωση των εικόνων των αλγοριθμικών επίπλων του καταστήματος που εμφανίζονται στην οθόνη προβολής. Οι εικόνες αρχίζουν να αποκτούν μια οργανική κίνηση, και να εμφανίζουν τη μοριακή τους δομή, ως σωματίδια που βρίσκονται σε κίνηση. Ανάλογα λοιπόν τη κινητική ενέργεια που εντοπίζει το σύστημα ανάλυσης, τα σωματίδια αυτά αποπροσανατολίζονται και μεταβάλουν αντιστοίχως τη μορφή των επίπλων. Η συνολική αυτή εγκατάσταση προβάλλει τις σχετικές πληροφορίες της ταυτότητας του καταστήματος, και την ίδια στιγμή παρουσιάζει ένα διαδραστικό πλαίσιο για συμμετοχή σε πραγματικό χρόνο.

This installation involves the creation of an interactive application that is based on the analysis of the presence and movement of passers-by from the shopping window of AFU. A camera tracks the presence of visitors and a computer vision analysis system tracks specific data that are used to transform the images of the algorithmic furniture of the store that appear in the projection screen. The images start having an organic movement, and to show their molecular structure, as particles in motion. Based on the kinetic energy that is tracked from the computer vision analysis system, these particles disorient and morph the structure of the projected furniture. The overall installation projects the information that is relevant to the store's identity, and same time create an interactive framework for realtime participation.

Facewall - Social Media Installation

Σε αυτή την εγκατάσταση έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί το Facebook ως πλατφόρμα για τη δημιουργία ενός έργου που λαμβάνει δεδομένα από τους χρήστες (όπως φωτογραφίες από το προφίλ τους ή ώρα online χρήσης) και δημιουργεί ένα κολλάζ από πρόσωπα σε πραγματικό χρόνο. Το σύστημα έχει προγραμματιστεί στη γλώσσα Processing, και στηρίζετε κυρίως σε αλγόριθμους επεξεργασίας εικόνας και δεδομένων που δημιουργήθηκαν για την εγκατάσταση αυτή. Η οθόνη προβολής (3D σχέδια από την Κάλλια Πλατύρραχου) αποτελείται από τρεις κάθετες παραλληλόγραμμες λωρίδες που είναι τοποθετημένες σε διαφορετικό ύψος και βάθος στο χώρο της εγκατάστασης, δημιουργώντας μια διασπώμενη οπτική γωνία ενός εικονικού χώρου που βρίσκεται σε σύμπτυξη.

In this project, the Facebook has been used as a platform for the creation of a system installation that uses online data from the users (such as pictures from their profiles, or online time) and creates a photographic collage in real-time. The system has been programmed in Processing, and it is based on algorithms - that have been created for this specific installation - for the manipulation of image and data . The projection screen (the following 3D models were made from Kallia Platyrrachoy) is comprised from three rectangular vertical banners that are installed in different height and depth positions. Thus, the installation is able to create fragmented visual angles of a virtual space that is in fusion.

Media System Installation: Rafinaria Club

Αυτή η εγκατάσταση περιλαμβάνει τη δημιουργία και ανάπτυξη ενός αντικειμένου που έχει τοποθετηθεί στο τοίχο της κονσόλας του Rafinaria Club, και λειτουργεί ως οθόνη καθώς δέχεται video προβολή από το πρόγραμμα VJ Mode 1.5. Με τη χρήση της λειτουργίας projection mapping του προγράμματος, μπορούμε να επιλέξουμε συγκεκριμένα σημεία του αντικειμένου για προβολή. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι ένας σύνθετος χώρος προβολής που μπορεί είτε να δείξει μια εικόνα/video τεμαχισμένο σε 9 διαφορετικά σημεία, ή μπορεί να δείξει 9 διαφορετικές εικόνες/video σε κάθε επιφάνεια του αντικειμένου.

This installation involves the creation and development of a sculpture that is placed on the wall of the DJ decks of Rafinaria Club, and it acts as a screen that receives video projections from the software application VJ Mode 1.5. With the use of the projection mapping methods that are enabled in this application, we can select specific places of where to send each projection on top of this sculpture. The result is a complex projection space that can show either an image/video cut in 9 different pieces, or it can show 9 different images on each surface.

Φέτος είναι η δεύτερη χρονιά που λειτουργεί το σύστημα MultiVideoStation σε αυτό το χώρο. Το πρόγραμμα που έχει εγκατασταθεί επιτρέπει τον έλεγχο και προγραμματισμό σε διάφορα δημοφιλή multimedia formats, όπως π.χ. .avi, .mov, .mpeg, .jpeg, .png, .mp3, .wav, κλπ. Για τις ανάγκες του συγκεκριμένου χώρου διασκέδασης, έχει δημιουργηθεί μια ροή που αυτοματοποιεί τη βάση δεδομένων ανάλογα την ώρα και την ημέρα της εβδομάδας. Ο χρήστης ακόμα έχει τη δυνατότητα απομακρυσμένου ελέγχου του συστήματος μέσω laptop ή κινητό τηλέφωνο. Ακόμα, υπάρχει η δυνατότητα αυτόματης αναβάθμισης της βάσης δεδομένων μέσω διακομιστή - server.

This year is the second time that the system MultiVideoStation operates in this specific place. The application that has been installed allows the control and programming of various popular multimedia formats such as .avi, .mov, .mpeg, .jpeg, .png, .mp3, .wav, etc. For the demands of this specific entertainment space (live music performances), there has been created a media flow that automates the database based on a specific hour and day of the week. Also, the user can remotely control the system from a laptop or a mobile phone. Moreover, there is the opportunity to update the database from a web server.

Έτσι, με τη χρήση των δύο προγραμμάτων έχουμε τη δυνατότητα να δημιουργήσουμε οπτικοακουστικά shows για εντυπωσιακά real-time performances. For the demands of the software program VJ Mode there was created a series of devices that allow the synchronization between video and audio/midi clips with Ableton Live. So, by using these two programs we have the ability to create audiovisual shows for impressive real-time performances. M4L Devices of VJ Mode allow us to synchronize audio and video of our choice, with opportunities to automate the visual synthesis based on audio levels from each channel of Ableton Live, and many other unique choices. In this upgrade of the program there have been included a number of functions for real-time performance as well as automation functions for permanent installations. Following you may find the upgraded functions:

3) Added Video Player - it can be used for advertising, or other clubbing utilities, i.e. intros.

Media System Installation: Kalliston Live

Η συγκεκριμένη multimedia εγκατάσταση βρίσκεται στο κέντρο διασκέδασης Κάλλιστον (Σητεία, Κρήτη), και έχει εγκατασταθεί από την SoniconLab. Το σύστημα αποτελείται από 4 projectors με συνολική φωτεινότητα 24.000 ANSI Lumens, μια οθόνη προβολής που καλύπτει επιφάνεια 30 τετραγωνικών (15x2 μέτρα), και ένα λογισμικό σύστημα που ελέγχει και αυτοματοποιεί όλες τις διεργασίες που απαιτούνται. Το πρόγραμμα βασίζεται στην εφαρμογή MultiVideo Station, όμως έχουν γίνει ειδικές αναβαθμίσεις σε βασικές λειτουργίες για την κάλυψη των αναγκών του χώρου αυτού. Για παράδειγμα, ο χρήστης έχει τη δυνατότητα να επιλέξει μέσα από μια μεγάλη γκάμα οπτικών θεμάτων που έχουν σχεδιαστεί για συγκεκριμένες κοινωνικές εκδηλώσεις (π.χ. γάμος, βάφτιση, δεξίωση, κλπ). Το κάθε θέμα μπορεί να προγραμματιστεί για συγκεκριμένη ώρα και ημέρα. Presentation @ Pecha Kucha, Her. Vol #2

Στις 9 Σεπτεμβρίου του 2011 παρουσίασα στο Pecha Kucha Her. Vol. #2 μερικά από τα πράγματα που σχετίζονται με την έρευνά μου και τις πιο πρόσφατες δουλειές μου στο τομέα media art & technology. Παράλληλα με τη παρουσίαση και τη βοήθεια στην προετοιμασία του event, δημιούργησα μια διαδραστική εγκατάσταση που χρησιμοποιεί τη κίνηση των περαστικών για την επιρροή των κινούμενων γραφικών που προβάλλονται με τη χρήση δύο οθονών. Σε γενικές γραμμές το event ήταν φανταστικό, και θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τόσο την ομάδα που το οργάνωσε, όσο και τον κόσμο που μας υποστήριξε και μας τίμησε με τη παρουσία σου.

At the 9th of September 2011 I presented in Pecha Kucha Her. Vol. #2 some of the things that relate to my current research and the most recent installations in media art & technology. In parallel with the presentation and the help for organizing this event, I created an interactive installation that uses the movement of the visitors to affect the motion graphics that appear on two screens. In general, the event was fantastic and I would like to thank the organizing team, as well as the people that supported us.

MultiScreen Projection in RAI Club, Hersonissos

Σε αυτή την εγκατάσταση έχει δημιουργηθεί ένα περιβάλλον με 8 οθόνες συνολικής ανάλυσης 8.192 x 6.144 pixels. Το πρόγραμμα VJ Mode 1.5 από την SoniconLab έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί για τον έλεγχο όλης της εγκατάστασης. Έχουν εφαρμοστεί ειδικές λειτουργίες για την καλύτερη εφαρμογή της προβολής στα πλαίσια οθόνης, και η τελική εικόνα χωρίζεται σε οκτώ διαφορετικές οθόνες προβολής. Το σύστημα είναι αυτοματοποιημένο σε μεγάλο βαθμό, και έχει την ικανότητα να δημιουργεί ένα διαφορετικό show κάθε βράδυ. Τα αποτελέσματα είναι πολύ διαφορετικά, επιτρέποντας τη ποικιλία βάσει των δυναμικών δυνατοτήτων του προγράμματος. Όλο το πρόγραμμα έχει αναλάβει την αυτόματη προβολή υλικού για μια ολόκληρη σεζόν.

In this installation a multiscreen environment was created that consists of 8 screens of maximum resolution of 8.192 x 6.144 pixels. VJ Mode 1.5 from SoniconLab is used to control the whole installation. There has been applied a keystone function to match the size and position of each screen, and split each part of the final image/video to each of the eight screens. There has been applied a very detailed automation that controls the whole show every night. However, the results vary tremendously as the dynamic features enable for different results constantly. The show has been automated to run autonomously for a whole season.

Media System Installation: Status, Hersonissos 2011

Εγκατάσταση media συστήματος στο νυχτερινό club Status στη Χερσόνησο Κρήτης. Για τις απαιτήσεις της εγκατάστασης αυτής δημιουργήθηκε ένα υπολογιστικό σύστημα που δίνει τη δυνατότητα για τη δημιουργία και τον έλεγχο multimedia αρχείων, και στη συνέχεια την αυτοματοποίηση πολύπλοκων λειτουργιών, αλλά και το συνδυασμό πολλαπλών υπολογιστικών συστημάτων και προβολή εικόνας/βίντεο σε πολλαπλές οθόνες. Ο χρήστης μπορεί άμεσα να περιηγηθεί στη βασική διεπαφή του συστήματος και να ρυθμίσει όλες τις σχετικές ιδιότητες της εφαρμογής για εντυπωσιακά shows σε πραγματικό χρόνο επεξεργασίας.

Media system installation in the nightclub Status in Hersonissos, Crete. For the demands of this installation a computational system was created that offers the possibility for creation and control of multimedia material, and following that to enable full automation in complex functions, as well as set protocols for the communication between multiple computers, and finally project the final image/video into multiple screens. The user can navigate through the main interface of the system and set all the relevant functions that will define the creation of impressive shows in real-time processing.

Planetary Collegium Sessions - Kefalonia, April 2011

"The Planetary Collegium is an international platform for research in art, technology and consciousness, with its hub based in the University of Plymouth, with linked centers in Zurich and Milan. Its president is Roy Ascott" (http://www.planetary-collegium.net/).

In April 2011 I had the change to visit the new Ionian Centre for the Arts and Culture in Kefalonia, Greece, which is a very innovative space that is devoted to art, culture, and technology.

The CAiiA-Hub Spring Session presented the latest work of the PhD candidates from the Planetary Collegium in subjects that relate to aesthetics, virtual reality, responsive architecture, mind & consciousness, technoetics, art & science, media archaeology, music composition, and many more.

Remixing in Ableton

Μάθετε ότι χρειάζεται για να φτιάξετε το δικό σας remix, με όλες τις σύγχρονες τεχνικές που χρησιμοποιούν επαγγελματίες μουσικοί παραγωγοί. Το Ableton είναι μια ψηφιακή πλατφόρμα ηχογράφησης, σύνθεσης, επεξεργασίας ήχου και μουσικής. Χρησιμοποιείται ως εργαλείο σε studio αλλά και σε ζωντανές εκτελέσεις (performances) από επαγγελματίες μουσικούς και παραγωγούς σε όλο το κόσμο.

Σε αυτό το εργαστήριο θα δούμε τα βασικά μέρη και λειτουργίες του προγράμματος, και θα αναλύσουμε τις δυνατότητές του θεωρητικά αλλά και πρακτικά. Θα μάθουμε το τρόπο με τον οποίο μπορούμε να συγχρονίσουμε διαφορετικά μουσικά και ηχητικά δείγματα, και θα δούμε τεχνικές σύνθεσης, μίξης, αυτοματισμού, και επεξεργασίας ήχου. Στη συνέχεια θα δούμε πώς μπορούμε να εφαρμόσουμε τις προηγούμενες τεχνικές για τη δημιουργία ενός επαγγελματικού remix, και να εξάγουμε το τελικό μας προιόν στη καλύτερη ηχητική ποιότητα.

Τέλος, θα δούμε τρόπους με τους οποίους μπορούμε να πραγματοποιήσουμε μια ζωντανή εκτέλεση, αλλά και πώς μπορούμε να προγραμματίσουμε δικές μας μονάδες επεξεργασίας με το πρωτόκολλο Max For Live.

"DJ Workshop - All about DJing"

Στο εργαστήριο θα γίνει αναφορά και ανάλυση όλων των θεμάτων που αφορούν αυτό το φαινόμενο, όπως: ιστορία του DJing, εξοπλισμός, τεχνολογία, μουσική θεωρία, αρχές του DJing, τεχνολογία audio, μουσική έρευνα, ηχογράφηση, προώθηση, μουσικά studios, παραγωγή και remixing, και άλλα πολλά.

Το σεμινάριο θα ολοκληρωθεί σε 12 ώρες, μεταξύ Σαββάτου και Κυριακής 4-5 Δεκεμβρίου. Στο σεμινάριο θα υπάρχουν σχετικά μηχανήματα για πρακτική από τους συμμετέχοντες. Κατά την ολοκλήρωση του σεμιναρίου θα γίνει πιστοποίηση με ειδικό δίπλωμα Certificate.
Το σεμινάριο έχει άδεια από το Υπουργείο Παιδείας.

I have recently started my PhD research at the Institute of Digital Arts Technology (University of Plymouth, Centre for Art, Media and Design Research), under the supervision of Prof. Mike Phillips and Dr. Chris Speed. My research focuses on media art and technology that it is applied as a construction material to architectural spaces.

The research proposes ways to modify and transform the spaces we occupy with system programming (ambient intelligence/ubiquitous computing) and approaches the installation as a new media development. The design process is always in accordance to user needs and preferences, based on research on psycho-physiological studies.

Plinthos Pavilion

Plinthos Pavilion is an installation that was made for the Interior Design Show (ID10), during 26-29 of November 2010, in Metamorphosis, Athens. The concept and the design of the construction were made from mabarchitects, and the interactive system installation, programming, and media design was made from SoniconLab. The collaboration of these two teams created an interactive space that uses architectural design and media technologies in absolute harmony, and presents to the visitors an interface that oscillates between realities, reflection, and transparency.

Plinthos is a sculpture made of tens of thousands of bricks. The bricks are positioned in a new way so that the structure becomes transparent. Bricks, light, sound, air all merge together with the use of interactivity and media technologies resulting in a space that offers new and alternative experiences. Every material affects one another in peculiar ways, but altogether they form a balanced equation of a space that you can visit, explore and feel.

The system behind this installation is responsible for the sonic ambience that is created, and balances between the rough texture of the surface and an earthly and harmonic sonification. Each new frequency that appears through the sound spectrum does not affect only our perception, but also it defines the light design that the visitor can see through the 261,792 holes of the structure. Every position and rotation has a different result, and this experience is the outcome of an interplay between ourselves and the structure.

The cylinders that appeared in the middle of Plinthos become triggering mechanisms that are linked to the memory of the place. Each interaction with these metallic interfaces bring to life past memories emerging from the creation of the space; an ancient heart that is brought to the future.

System Installation at Sapouni Club, Heraklion, Crete

Η ομάδα της SoniconLab δημιούργησε και εγκατέστησε ένα διαδραστικό οπτικοακουστικό σύστημα στο Sapouni Club, στο Ηράκλειο Κρήτης. Το σύστημα αποτελείται από μια σταθερή οθόνη μεγέθους 7 x 1.7 μέτρα, προβολή multi-screen, και ένα υπολογιστικό σύστημα. Ο προγραμματισμός της εφαρμογής και ο σχεδιασμός των visuals έχει γίνει από την SoniconLab. Το σύστημα ακόμα έχει δυνατότητες για real-time επεξεργασία και οπτικοποίηση ήχου, τρισδιάστατα γραφικά, επιλογές για προβολή διαφημίσεων/flyers/events, σύνδεση με κάμερες, και πλήρης αυτοματοποίηση σε όλη τη διαδικασία σύνθεσης και επεξεργασίας.

The team of SoniconLab created an interactive audiovisual installation in Sapouni Club in Heraklion Crete. The system is comprised from a fixed screen of 7 x 1.7 meters, multi-screen projection, and a processing unit. The system programming and the visual design has been made by SoniconLab. Moreover the system can process and visualize real-time audio, show 3D graphics, select advertising methods such as videos, flyers, posters, connect with cameras, and automate the whole process efficiently and great easiness.

VJ Mode in Concert: Hernan Cattaneo @ Matrix Club (3/9/2010)

Στις 3 Σεπτεμβρίου 2010 εγκατέστησα στο Matrix Club (Χερσόνησσος) το VJ Mode 1.2 σε ένα σύστημα με multi-screen δυνατότητες σε ένα event με guest DJ τον Hernan Cattaneo. Το σύστημα συνθέτει τα οπτικά θέματα αυτόματα ή χειροκίνητα και αποτελεί το κυρίως σύστημα για τις εφαρμογές VJing του club. Το βασικό σύστημα VJ Mode είναι εγκατεστημένο σε ένα υπολογιστή Mac Pro. Παράλληλα χρησιμοποιώ ένα laptop Mac Book Pro και με τη βοήθεια του προγράμματος OSC Remote Control που διαθέτεται δωρεάν με το VJ Mode 1.2, μπορώ να χειριστώ ασύρματα το σύστημα από όποια τοποθεσία θέλω. Έτσι το laptop στήθηκε δίπλα στη κονσόλα σε ένα σημείο όπου μπορούσα να έχω καλή οπτική και αρκετό χώρο παράλληλα. Επίσης συνέδεσα ένα Novation Remote MIDI Controller για το χειρισμό του συστήματος. Έτσι το αποτέλεσμα είναι μια οθόνη προβολής με διαστάσεις 7 x 1.5 μέτρα, και παράλληλα 6 TFT οθόνες που βρίσκονται περιμετρικά στο χώρο. Ableton Plugins . Max4Live

Η εταιρία Ableton στην έκδοση του λογισμικού Ableton Live 8, δίνει τη δυνατότητα προγραμματισμού μονάδων (plugins) ήχου και εικόνας με τη βοήθεια της πλατφόρμας προγραμματισμού Max/MSP.

Παρακάτω θα δείτε δύο μονάδες που έχω προγραμματίσει κυρίως για επεξεργασία ήχου. Το πρώτο plugin είναι ένα ψηφιακό φασματικό φίλτρο το οποίο βασίζεται σε ανάλυση FFT και επεξεργασία. Το δεύτερο plugin είναι για τη δημιουργία αντήχησης, το οποίο και αυτό στηρίζεται σε τεχνικές ηχητικής ψηφιακής επεξεργασίας σήματος. Και τα δύο plugins μπορείτε να τα κατεβάσετε δωρεάν από το site της Sonicon Lab και να δείτε αν θέλετε τη τεχνική δημιουργίας τους. Χρειάζεται όμως να έχετε την έκδοση Ableton Live 8 για να τρέξετε τα plugins.

Music Cafe

Φέτος την άνοιξη έγινε η κυκλοφορία του Music Cafe από την Sonicon Lab. Το συγκεκριμένο πρόγραμμα έγινε για την εύκολη δημιουργία μουσικού προγράμματος ροής.

Η εφαρμογή μπορεί να αυτοματοποιηθεί και να εκτελέσει με μίξη μουσικό πρόγραμμα που μπορεί να διαρκέσει μέχρι και μήνες χωρίς να επαναλαμβάνει τις μουσικές επιλογές. Το πρόγραμμα μπορεί να εγκατασταθεί σε Windows ή MacOS λειτουργικά συστήματα, και η εισαγωγή του στον υπολογιστή γίνεται με εξαιρετική ευκολία.

Απευθύνεται κυρίως σε χώρους όπου απαιτείται μουσικό πρόγραμμα ροής με μίξη των κομματιών, όπως για παράδειγμα σε ξενοδοχεία, εστιατόρια, bars, και καφετέριες. Ο χρήστης μπορεί να καθορίσει αν θέλει τη μουσική ροή ανά μισή ώρα, και για μια ολόκληρη βδομάδα.

Το VJ Mode 1.2 είναι μια εφαρμογή που έχω προγραμματίσει στην εταιρία Sonicon Lab για την δημιουργία οπτικών shows για clubs, festivals, καφετέριες, bars, lobbies, κλπ. Το πρόγραμμα βασίζεται στη ψηφιακή επεξεργασία videos με τη δυνατότητα εκατοντάδων επεκτάσιμων εφφέ.

Δέχεται την επεξεργασία ήχου και εύρεσης συγκεκριμένων συχνοτήτων για την αυτοματοποίηση της οπτικής επεξεργασίας. Μπορεί να δεχθεί πολλαπλές βάσεις δεδομένων, και να δημιουργήσει πολύ εύκολα εντυπωσιακά visual shows. Ακόμα επιτρέπει το συνδυασμό πολλαπλών οθονών με ένα πολύ πρακτικό keystone για εξαιρετική ευκολία στην εγκατάσταση. Τέλος επιτρέπει την εγγραφή των shows σε αρχείο video που μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί αργότερα για περαιτέρω επεξεργασία.

Multi-Video Station

Το Multi-Video Station είναι μια εφαρμογή που έγινε για τη δημιουργία και έλεγχο multimedia shows. Το πρόγραμμα μπορεί να ελέγχει φακέλους και αρχεία multimedia (εικόνα, ήχος, video) και επιτρέπει τον αυτοματισμό της επιλογής και αναπαραγωγής τους μέσω μιας μπάρας χρόνου. Έτσι μπορούμε να έχουμε άμεσο έλεγχο των οπτικών shows που θέλουμε να δημιουργήσουμε, και είναι μια εφαρμογή ιδανική για διαφήμιση και προώθηση προιόντων. Η εφαρμογή μπορεί να εγκατασταθεί σε clubs, καφετέριες, ξενοδοχεία, και galleries.

Το πρόγραμμα θα κυκλοφορήσει σύντομα από την Sonicon Lab.

Kalliston - Interactive Multi-Screen Installation

Kalliston is a large venue and a modern entertainment facility in eastern Crete. In this space I installed a multimedia system that includes a screen with dimensions 14 x 3 meters, 4 projectors, 1 Mac Pro, and a software application. The application controls the projection surface, the media players, incoming video from cameras, visual effects, and many more. With this specific application the user is able to control all the multimedia files of the system, and create timelines of automated actions so that an impressive shows can emerge. The system is on public display from September 2009.

Το Κάλλιστον είναι ίσως το μεγαλύτερο και πιο σύγχρονο κέντρο διασκέδασης της ανατολικής Κρήτης, στη Σητεία. Σε αυτό το χώρο ανέλαβα τη κατασκευή ενός multimedia συστήματος που απαρτίζεται από μια οθόνη προβολής 14 x 3 μέτρων, 4 projectors, 1 Mac Pro, και μια λογισμική multimedia εφαρμογή που προγραμμάτισα. Η εφαρμογή αυτή επιτρέπει τον έλεγχο εικόνων, φωτογραφιών, video, είσοδο live κάμερας, οπτικά εφφέ, vfx, και άλλα πολλά. Με τη συγκεκριμένη εφαρμογή μπορούμε να ελέγχουμε ταυτόχρονα όλα τα multimedia αρχεία και να προβάλουμε στη γιγαντιαία οθόνη προβολής το θέμα που επιθυμούμε. Η εγκατάσταση έχει ολοκληρωθεί και το σύστημα λειτουργεί κανονικά μέχρι και σήμερα.

V.In.S. - Visual Interactive Synthesis

The following program was developed from Interactive Audiovisual Systems Ltd. and Stavros Didakis for the requirements of the Aurora Festival, one of the biggest electronic music festivals in Greece. In order to reach the demands of the festival, this software provides a solution for the creation of visual material in the 50 square meters LED screen. The program becomes an intelligent visual synthesizer that analyzes music in real-time and creates optical events that match closely the acoustic energy. Based on a smart engine and a unique image generator, the system collects visual elements from a stored database and with the use of visual processing algorithms creates innovative graphics that are output in a variety of display formats. The system is fully automated, however the user may control the system in order to design a VJ performance, and furthermore it can be MIDI controlled with the use of any interactive hardware device. As a result, this software development becomes a high standards solution for the creation and design of the visual material that is needed in festivals, dance parties and clubs, as it is able to provide automatically hundreds of hours with impressive-never-seen-before visuals and motion graphics.

Robotic DJ - Νέο Σύστημα Αυτόματης Μίξης και Επιλογής Μουσικής

Το Robotic DJ είναι ένα νέο σύστημα που σχεδιάστηκε πρόσφατα από την εταιρία Interactive Audiovisual Systems Ltd. και τον Σταύρο Διδάκη, και απευθύνεται σε επαγγελματίες που θέλουν μια σωστή και εύκολη λύση για μουσικό πρόγραμμα υψηλών απαιτήσεων στο χώρο τους. Το σύστημα βασίζεται σε μια σκεπτόμενη μηχανή που αναλύει τις ανάγκες του κάθε χώρου και διαμορφώνει αναλόγως το μουσικό αποτέλεσμα. Έχει τη δυνατότητα να δέχεται λίστες δεδομένων (μουσικών κομματιών μορφής mp3) και αυτόματα να αναλύει τη μουσική για καλύτερη και αρμονική μίξη. Robotic DJ is a new system that has been developed recently from Interactive Audiovisual Systems Ltd. and Stavros Didakis, and it is addressed to professionals that want to have a solid solution for a high standards music program. The system is based on a thinking engine that analyses the demands of each space and forms accordingly the music result. It can receive database lists of music songs (mp3) and to automatically analyze and categorize for correct and harmonic mixing. The user can create in seconds a playlist of preference, and to design very easily the music flow even for hours. The adjustments are automatically stored so that the program knows the user selections, and it does not need to be programmed again. Moreover, the song selections from the program are unique each time, which gives a possibility for million of different choices. Finally, the program allows the automatic upgrade of the music repertoire from a network place, a function that can take place automatically without the user involvement.

Το καλοκαίρι του 2009 η εταιρία Interactive Audiovisual Systems Ltd. εγκατέστησε στο Status Club στη Χερσόνησσο Κρήτης ένα μοναδικό multimedia σύστημα με δυνατότητες αυτοματισμού, επεξεργασίας, ανάλυσης και προβολής εικόνας. Το σύστημα αποτελείται από τρεις οθόνες προβολής (1 οθόνη οπίσθιας προβολής 5μ.*70εκ., 1 οθόνη εμπρόσθιας προβολής 2.5μ.*1.4μ., και 1 οθόνη 1.5μ.*70εκ.), 6 προτζέκτορες, 3 υπολογιστές, και ένα λογισμικό πρόγραμμα της εταιρίας IAS που αναπτύχθηκε για αυτή τη συγκεκριμένη εγκατάσταση.

In summer 2009 the company Interactive Audiovisual Systems Ltd. installed in Status Club in Hersonissos Crete, a unique multimedia system with great possibilities of automation, processing and image analysis and projection. The system is comprised from three projection screens (1 back screen projection 5m*70cm, 1 screen 2.5m*1.4m, and 1 screen 1.5m*70cm), 6 projectors, 3 computers, and a software program from the IAS company that was developed for this specific installation.

Το σύστημα ελέγχει το συγχρονισμό μεταξύ των υπολογιστών έτσι ώστε να προβάλεται η ίδια θεματολογία στις τρεις οθόνες, με διαφορετικό οπτικό υλικό όμως που ταιριάζει στο κάθε τομέα (για παράδειγμα στο χώρο των Djs δημιουργούνται οπτικά μουσικά στοιχεία, στο χώρο του bar οπτικά στοιχεία με ποτά, κλπ). Για την εγκατάσταση αυτή έχουν δημιουργηθεί αρκετές δεκάδες θέματα τα οποία προβάλλονται αυτόματα, ακολουθώντας τους αλγοριθμικούς υπολογισμούς του συστήματος. Τα θέματα μπορούν να αναβαθμιστούν πολύ εύκολα, ακόμα και αυτόματα μέσω δικτυακού τόπου.

The system controls the synchronization between the computers so that the same thematology is projected in the three screens, however with different visual material that closely matches each section at the best (for example in the Dj booth area there are projected musical elements, in the bar area drink and cocktail elements, etc). For this installation there have been created dozens of different themes that are projected automatically according to the algorithmic processing of the system. The themes can be upgraded very easily, even automatically through a network space.

Το βασικό χειριστήριο του προγράμματος επιτρέπει τον έλεγχο των projectors - όπως φωτεινότητα, αντίθεση, blackout, κλπ. - αλλά και την εισαγωγή άλλων οπτικών θεμάτων, όπως μουσικά videos τα οποία μπορούν να φορτώνονται αυτόματα από συγκεκριμένα σημεία auto-cues, για άμεση προβολή ήχου και εικόνας. Ο χειρισμός του συστήματος μπορεί να γίνει και μέσω ασύρματης συσκευής Bluetooth ή Wifi.

The main interface of the program allows the control of the projectors - luminosity, contrast, blackout, etc - as also the insertion of other visuals such as music videos that can be loaded automatically from specific auto-cue points for immediate sound and image projection. Το Matrix Club είναι κατά τη γνώμη μου ένα από τα καλύτερα clubs στη Κρήτη, που ακολουθεί πιστά τις εξελίξεις στη μουσική χορευτική σκηνή και τις τεχνολογίες του clubbing. Έτσι, κατόπιν φιλοσοφικών αναζητήσεων με τους ιδιοκτήτες, καταφέραμε να δημιουργήσουμε μια νέα αισθητική και τεχνολογική εγκατάσταση για τον απόλυτο εντυπωσιαμό των clubbers. Το αποτέλεσμα της εγκατάστασης μπορείτε να δείτε στη παρακάτω εικόνα.

Matrix Club, according to my opinion, is one of the best clubs in Crete as it follows loyally the evolution of the music dance scene and the clubbing technology. Thus, after a philosophical quest I had with the owners, we managed to create a new aesthetic and technological installation for the maximum impressiveness of the clubbers. The result of the installation appears in the next picture.

Το σύστημα αποτελείται από μια οθόνη προβολής 10m * 2m, τέσσερις projectors τεχνολογίας short-throw, και δύο υπολογιστικά συστήματα τα οποία έχουν δημιουργηθεί για τη συγκεκριμένη εγκατάσταση έτσι ώστε να μπορούν να προβάλουν σε μεγάλες αναλύσεις και σε διάφορα formats εικόνας. Το υλικό που προβάλεται αποτελείται από γραφικά που δημιουργούνται σε πραγματικό χρόνο, logo flash animations, προσαρμοσμένα footage clips, video clips, scrolling κείμενο όπου μπορεί να δημιουργηθεί σε πραγματικό χρόνο, ειδικά οπτικά εφφέ, εισαγωγή εικόνας από κάμερα, και τέλος ανάλυση ήχου και οπτικοποίηση σε διάφορες μορφές.

The system is comprised from a projection screen 10m * 2m, four projectors with short-throw technology, and two computer systems that have been designed for this specific installation in order to support great resolutions for extended movie formats. The material that is projected comes from real-time generated graphics, logo flash animations, adjusted footage clips, music videos, scrolling text that can be entered in real time, special visual effects, live feed from a camera, and finally audio analysis and visualization in various forms.

Το τελικό αποτέλεσμα λοιπόν είναι μια σύνθετη προβολή που δημιουργείται από πολύπλοκες ψηφιακές διαδικασίες. Το σύστημα είναι πλήρες αυτοματοποιημένο, παρέχοντας όμως με ένα controller λειτουργίες επεξεργασίας και ρύθμισης από το χρήστη. Τέλος υπάρχει η δυνατότητα επέκτασης του συστήματος, και η διαφοροποίηση της θεματολογίας με μεγάλη ευκολία. Το όλο concept το έχει επιμεληθεί η εταιρία Interactive Audiovisual Systems Ltd., όπως επίσης έχει αναλάβει την εγκατάσταση και το προγραμματισμό του συστήματος. The final result is a sophisticated projection that it is generated from complex digital processing. The system is fully automated, providing however with a controller functions for processing and adjustment to the user. Finally there is the possibility for further upgrade, and differentiation of the thematology with great easiness. The whole concept is managed from the company Interactive Audiovisual Systems Ltd., as also the installation and the programming of the system. Hopefully, this summer we can all enjoy an innovative and impressive audiovisual show.

Ο κάθε αρχιτεκτονικός χώρος σχεδιάζεται κυρίως βάσει των απαιτήσεων, της αισθητικής και της χρηστικότητας ή της πρακτικής του εφαρμογής. Ακολούθως, δημιουργείται και ο ηχητικός χαρακτήρας του χώρου αυτού, ένας παράγοντας που είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντικός τα τελευταία χρόνια για αρκετούς μελετητές, ερευνητές, αρχιτέκτονες, ιστορικούς και φυσικά για τους μηχανικούς ήχου και ακουστικής. Η ακουστική μελέτη είναι μια σύνθετη διαδικασία ανάλυσης των φυσικών χαρακτηριστικών του εσωτερικού χώρου, που ως σκοπό φέρει τον άρτιο σχεδιασμό του ακουστικού χαρακτήρα, που πρέπει να εκφράζει το χώρο και να δένει αρμονικά με την υπόλοιπη σχεδίαση.

Every architectural space is designed according to its demands, its aesthetics, and the uses it is intended. In the same manner the acoustic character is created, a factor that it is so important especially the last years for many researchers, architects, and of course sound and acoustic engineers. The acoustic design is a complicated process that analyses the physical characteristics of the interior space, in order to bring an acoustic character that matches harmonically with the rest space.

Η ανάλυση και μελέτη της ακουστικής και ηλεκτροακουστικής συμπεριφοράς σε κλειστούς χώρους (όπως νυχτερινά κέντρα διασκέδασης, καφετέριες, ξενοδοχεία κλπ) τα τελευταία χρόνια γίνεται όλο και περισσότερο με καλύτερα αποτελέσματα κάθε φορά. Βάσει των πιο προηγμένων εφαρμογών τεχνικής ανάλυσης, μπορούμε πλέον να παρέχουμε τις καλύτερες λύσεις για την απόλυτη ηχητική ποιότητα. The study and analysis of the acoustic and electro-acoustic behavior of enclosed spaces (such as night clubs, cafeterias, hotels, etc.) the last years it becomes even frequent and with better results every time. According to the most advanced applications of technical analysis, we can provide the best solutions for the ultimate sound and acoustic quality. In every analysis we can create a computer simulation of the actual space in order to find the ideal sound system - place of installation, watt power - for the maximum output with the lowest cost. Even more, with the help of the finest acoustic measurement systems we can calculate the correct equalization of the sound system.

Ένα σημαντικό πρόβλημα όμως που αντιμετωπίζουν οι μηχανικοί ήχου και ακουστικής, είναι η διαφοροποίηση του ηχητικού αποτελέσματος αναλόγως της επισκεψιμότητας (πόσοι άνθρωποι βρίσκονται στο χώρο), τη θερμοκρασία, ή και την ώρα της ημέρας. A serious problem that sound and acoustic engineers face, is the alteration of the sound result according to a variety of variables such as the number of people that visit the space, temperature, time of the day, etc. A solution in there circumstances is the development of smart interactive systems that with the use of sensors observe these variables closely and analogically adjust the acoustic character. These applications are the finest of the acoustic and sound technology of today, and they will form this area accordingly the following years.

Το Δεκέμβριο του 2008 εγκαινιάστηκε ένα καινούργιο cafe-club στη παραλιακή οδό του Ηρακλείου Κρήτης. Το Room 109 είναι μια μινιμαλιστική και μοντέρνα αντίληψη στο καθεστώς του πολυπληθές, προσφέροντας μια καινούργια πρόταση για όλους όσους έχουν κουραστεί τα ίδια και τα ίδια. Στο χώρο αυτό λοιπόν, γεννήθηκε μια μοναδική ιδέα για μια εγκατάσταση διάδρασης υιοθετώντας τεχνικές συστημάτων από τεχνολογίες ambient intelligence. Το σύστημα αποτελείται από μια χειροποίητη κατασκευή οθόνης 7m * 1.5m, δυο projectors, ένα υπολογιστικό σύστημα ψηφιακής επεξεργασίας και σύνθεσης, και δυο κάμερες. Το σύστημα εκτελεί μια σειρά από δυνατότητες που δεν υπάρχουν διαθέσιμες στην αγορά σήμερα. Καταρχήν, επιτρέπει τη διαδικασία διάδρασης μεταξύ των οπτικών θεμάτων που δημιουργούνται σε πραγματικό χρόνο και στους χρήστες/πελάτες που βρίσκονται στο χώρο. Τα οπτικά θέματα έχουν προσαρμοστεί στην αισθητική του χώρου για να προσφέρουν μια νέα σχεδιαστική πρόταση. Η διάδραση αποτελεί ένα μοναδικό προσόν του συστήματος καθώς επιτρέπει στους πελάτες να δημιουργήσουν με τη κίνηση τους ή την τοποθεσία που βρίσκονται συνθήκες οπτικού σχεδιασμού στην οθόνη. Έτσι, έχουμε ως αποτέλεσμα ένα τεχνολογικό έργο τέχνης που αποτυπώνεται σε έναν ψηφιακό καμβά δίνοντας στους πελάτες την ευκαιρία να επιλέξουν την αισθητική έκβαση.

In December 2008 a new cafe-club was opened in the main port road in Heraklion Crete. Room 109 is a minimal and modern approach, offering a new suggestion to all of those that are tired seeing the same thing over and over again. In this space, a novel idea was created for an interactive installation that adopts technical methods from the area of ambient intelligence. The system comprises from a hand-made construction of a projection screen, two projectors, a computing system and two cameras. The system executes a number of applications that are not available on the market today. First of all, it allows an interaction between the visual graphics that are generated in the space and the visitors/customers that exist within this space. The visual themes have been adjusted to the aesthetics of the space so that they complete the interior designer's approach. The interaction is a very strong point of the system as it allows to the customers to create variations of the original theme according to their movement, their position, the circulation, etc. This gives us a result of a technological/art piece that prints on a digital canvas in real time opportunities to the customers to finalize the aesthetic outcome of the visual creation.

Το σύστημα περιέχει σύνθετες διαδικασίες προγραμματισμού για πλήρη αυτοματοποίηση, ανάλυση δεδομένων από τις κάμερες και σύνθεση οπτικών θεμάτων σε πραγματικό χρόνο. Υπάρχει άμεση δυνατότητα για αναβάθμιση ή θεματική διαφοροποίηση, όπως επίσης και εισαγωγή animation των λογότυπων του Room 109 και άλλων οπτικών θεμάτων που εναλλάσονται σχετικά με τις ανάγκες του χώρου, επιδεικνύοντας τη νοημοσύνη του συστήματος. Το σύστημα ήταν να εγκατασταθεί το Δεκέμβριο του 2008, όμως τελικά η εγκατάσταση αναβλήθει για τον επόμενο χειμώνα.

The system includes complex processing and programming, full automation, and computer vision analysis, and synthesis of the visual themes in real time. There is an opportunity for upgrade or thematic variation, as also as other visual subjects such as logo animations, or other subjects that are projected according to the needs of the space, giving aspects of intelligence to the system. Unfortunately, the system should be installed from December 2008, however its installation is postponed until the winter of 2009.

Το ξενοδοχείο St. George Lycabettus είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα και πιο αξιόλογα ξενοδοχεία της Ελλάδας. Βρίσκεται στο κέντρο της Αθήνας με μοναδική θέα την Ακρόπολη, και απαρτίζεται από ένα εξαιρετικό εστιατόριο, και το πολύ διάσημο Frame Bar το οποίο αναλαμβάνει τη διεξαγωγή πληθώρας κοσμικών events. Οι ανάγκες του ξενοδοχείου λοιπόν, ζητούσαν ένα ψηφιακό σύστημα πληροφοριών για άμεση πρόσβαση από τους επισκέπτες στην reception. Κατόπιν συναντήσεων, πρότεινα ένα σύστημα που θα αποτελείται από τρεις οθόνες αφής όπου η κάθεμια χωριστά θα μπορεί να παρέχει πληροφορίες στους επισκέπτες σχετικά με τον καιρό και την ώρα σε διάφορες ευρωπαικές πόλεις, διεθνή νέα, χάρτη περιοχής με τουριστικές προτάσεις, και άλλες σχετικές πληροφορίες για το ξενοδοχείο.

St. George Lycabettus Hotel is one of the most remarkable hotels in Greece. It is locate in the centre of Athens with an astonishing view of Acropolis, and it includes an exceptional restaurant as also as a very famous bar, called Frame, which it organizes a variety of cosmopolitan events. The needs of the hotel asked for a digital system of information for instant access from the visitors at the reception. After a few meetings, I suggested a system that comprises from three touch screens that each one provides information to the visitors in relevance to the weather, airports, local and national time, live streaming international news, area map with suggestions for tourists, and so on.

Η τεχνολογία πίσω από το σύστημα αυτό υποστηρίζει την εισαγωγή διαφόρων formats ήχου και εικόνας, όπως επίσης μπορεί και λαμβάνει διαδικτυακά πληροφορίες για ενημέρωση του συστήματος. The technology behind the system is fully compatible with a variety of audio, video and image formats, as also as it can receive from a network information and get updated automatically in real time. Ittar Lounge Cafe

In December 2008 I was chosen to setup the sound and visual system of Ittar Lounge Cafe, a famous cafeteria in Heraklion Crete. There, I studied closely the space, and considered the character the owners wanted this place to exhibit. The space however, had a serious acoustical problem, which it needed to be fixed instantly. For this reason I analyzed in great detail the space, and created a 3D simulation in order to examine the acoustic behavior and the sound system requirements. After finalizing these, I created an application that automatically adjusts the equalization of the space. This application is a software development that uses sensor devices to examine external variables and updates the sound system with the correct values. Moreover, I designed a VJ application for the LCD screens of the space that display graphic content, enhancing the features of the place and transform it into a piece of art.

Το καλοκαίρι του 2008 ξεκίνησα πειραματικά στο Ηράκλειο Κρήτης μια εταιρία με πρωτοποριακά συστήματα ήχου και εικόνας, συνδυάζοντας παράλληλα ηλεκτρονικούς αισθητήρες, μηχανική όραση, και διάφορα άλλα υπολογιστικά συστήματα που δεν έχουν δει το φως της εμπορικοποίησης ακόμα. Η κάθε εφαρμογή αναπτύσσεται σε πολύπλοκα συστήματα ψηφιακής επεξεργασίας, ξεπερνώντας την αδυναμία των κλασσικών συστημάτων που υπάρχουν στην αγορά. Έτσι, με αυτό το τρόπο, υπάρχει η δυνατότητα για μέγιστη ανάπτυξη σε πολλά θέματα που έχουν να κάνουν με ήχο, εικόνα, φωτισμό και διάδραση προσφέροντας εφαρμογές που ξεπερνάνε τη σφαίρα της φαντασίας.

In the summer of 2009 I started experimentally in Heraklion Crete, a company with innovative audiovisual systems that combine same time electronic sensors, computer vision, and other computational systems that have not been commercialized yet. Each application is developed within complicated digital processing systems that are able to avoid the weaknesses of normal systems that are available in the market today. Thus, in this manner there is a possibility for maximum development in a lot of installations that are relevant to sound, moving image, light and interaction, offering new opportunities for applications that go beyond the sphere of imagination.

Οι εφαρμογές των συστημάτων αυτών απευθύνονται σε κάθε είδους εταιρία που θέλει να προβάλει με διαφορετικό τρόπο την αισθητική της και να εδραιώσει τη θέση της ως πρωτοποριακή, έξυπνη, και δυναμική μέσα στην εποχή της ψηφιακής τεχνολογίας. Τα συστήματα που προτείνω λοιπόν, θα γίνουν το norm στην επιστήμη του marketing και της διαφήμισης - αν δεν έχουν γίνει ήδη. Ακόμα οφείλω να ενημερώσω πως ανα την υφήλιο μεγάλα ερευνητικά κέντρα δέχονται μεγάλη χρηματοδότηση για την ανάπτυξη τέτοιας τεχνολογίας, όπως για παράδειγμα το Ars Electronica Futurelab, Meso, Aesthetics and Computation Group, και άλλα πολλά.

The applications of these systems are mainly intended for companies that they want to project in an alternative way their aesthetics, and establish their position as innovative, clever and dynamic in the digital age of technology. These systems I am therefore suggesting, they will become eventually the norm in the science of marketing and advertising - if they haven't been already. We can also noticed that globally there are many research institutes that receive great funding for the development of similar technologies, as for example you can see in Ars Electronica Futurelab, Meso, Aesthetics and Computation Group, and many more.

Μέχρι στιγμής, η εταιρία έχει κλείσει σημαντικές συμφωνίες με ξενοδοχεία, καφετέριες, εμπορικά καταστήματα, και clubs. Ελπίζω να μπορέσω να δημιουργήσω ένα θετικό κλίμα προς τεχνολογίες που είναι ακόμα ανύπαρκτες στον εμπορικό κόσμο, και να εξελίξω όσο μπορώ το κάθε χώρο ξεχωριστά προβάλλοντας μια νέα και φρέσκια ματιά στο σχεδιασμό συστημάτων ήχου και εικόνας.

Until this moment, the company has closed a few important deals with hotels, cafeterias, shopping malls, and clubs. I hope to be able to create a positive attitude towards these technologies that are non-existent in the commercial world - especially in Crete - and to be able to evolve as much as I can this area projecting a new and fresh look to the design of audio and visual systems.

After the completion of my national diploma in Sound Engineering I started working with major venues in Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Athens in order to deliver high quality sound systems, something that gave me the opportunity to work with large scale installations. Το project αυτό αποτέλεσε μέρος της μεταπτυχιακής μου εργασίας στο SARC (Sonic Arts Research Centre), ένα από τα καλύτερα ερευνητικά κέντρα στο κόσμο της τεχνολογίας ήχου και μουσικής. Το συγκεκριμένο project εγκρίθηκε για επιχορήγηση από τον οργανισμό CETL (Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning) και από το συμβούλιο του νοσοκομείου Royal Victoria. Το σύστημα αποτελείται από 4 κάμερες και 16 ηχεία τα οποία βρίσκονται σε διάταξη custom-surround, και ένα υπολογιστικό σύστημα το οποίο δημιουργεί ηχητικά τοπία σε πραγματικό χρόνο. Η δημιουργία των ηχητικών συνθέσεων είναι αποτέλεσμα της ολικής κινητικότητας στο κεντρικό διάδρομο του νοσοκομείου.

This project was part of my Master dissertation in SARC (Sonic Arts Research Centre), one of the best research center in the world, focusing on sound technology, sonic arts, and music. The project was funded from CETL(Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning) and it was approved from the board of the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. The system is comprised from 4 cameras and 16 speakers that are installed in a custom-surround formation, and a computational system that generates sonic spaces in real time. The generation of the sonic syntheses is a result of the circulation from the visitors inside the central hallway of the hospital.

Το ψηφιακό σύστημα επεξεργασίας συλλέγει πληροφορίες από τις τέσσερις κάμερες της εγκατάστασης και αναλύει τα οπτικά δεδομένα με τεχνικές μηχανικής όρασης. Τα δεδομένα αναλύονται με στατιστικούς αλγόριθμους και τα αποτελέσματα των υπολογισμών μεταφέρονται αυτομάτως μέσω διαδικτύου σε ένα δεύτερο σύστημα το οποίο ευθύνεται για την ηχητική σύνθεση. Οι πληροφορίες λοιπόν ενεργοποιούν τις ανάλογες βάσεις δεδομένων του συστήματος όπου επιλέγουν ηχητικά στρώματα, ενεργοποιούν ηχητικά εφφέ, εναλλάσεται η προβολή στο surround σύστημα, όπως επίσης και πολλές άλλες διαδικασίες ηχητικής παραγωγής.

The digital processing system collects information from the cameras of the installation and analyses the optical data with computer vision processes. The data are analyzed with statistical algorithms, and their results are transferred automatically from the network to a second system that is responsible for the sound synthesis. According to the interaction information different databases are triggered that become the sound layers of the overall composition in real time. Moreover, sound effects are triggered in specific situations, as also as the surround formation, and many other process of audio production.

Following, there is a short piece from my Master's dissertation for the title of Master in Sonic Arts, from Queen's University of Belfast.

"This work intends to expand the notion of sound design and to use the potential of digital technology for integration inside the building fabric of the physical spaces we occupy, define areas of interference and use the architecture as a sonic vehicle or instrument. According to this, inhabitants of the environment would have the opportunity to enjoy relaxing ambiances in a more interactive way, and to create a vocabulary of sound design that is applied to the accompaniment of our daily lives. This case would create an expressive form of living architecture that uses sound as a medium to create pleasant moods, give richness and texture to the space, and furthermore create links and connections to an enhanced version of inhabitancy".

Το συγκεκριμένο project παρουσιάστηκε τον Ιούνιο του 2007 στο Sonic Arts Research Centre στο Μπέλφαστ. Το project δέχθηκε επιχορήγηση από τον οργανισμό CETL με επίβλεψη από τον Johannes Birringer ως artist in residence. Επίσης για το εγχείρημα αυτό συνεργάστηκαν έξι συνθέτες ηλεκτρο-ακουστικής μουσικής, και ηθοποιοί από τη δραματική σχολή του Queen's University. Όλο το προγραμματισμό του συστήματος τον επιμελήθηκα ο ίδιος, όπως επίσης το concept και τη παραγωγή.

This project was presented in June 2007 at the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast. The project received funding from the organization CETL with Johannes Birringer from Brunel University as supervisor (artist in residence). For this work six electro-acoustic music composers collaborated, together with actors from Queen's University dramatic school, and technicians. I was mainly in charge of the system management and programming.

Η εγκατάσταση και εκτέλεση του συγκεκριμένου έργου πήρε μέρος στο συναυλιακό χώρο του SARC, ο οποίος παρέχει το καλύτερο σύστημα ηχητικής προβολής στην Ευρώπη με 64 ηχεία σε surround διαμόρφωση - έτσι έχουμε προβολή ήχου μέχρι και 360 μοίρες γύρω από το ακροατήριο. Για το σύστημα επεξεργασίας χρειάστηκαν 7 iMac υπολογιστές συνδεδεμένοι παράλληλα διαδυκτιακά, και 4 projectors με συνολική ανάλυση 4800 x 3072 pixels. "Ο Κύβος" λοιπόν είναι ένα σύστημα διάδρασης και προβολής ήχου και εικόνας όπου ελέγχεται από ένα χειριστήριο (σε σχήμα κύβου φυσικά) το οποίο μπορεί να "εισβάλει" σε οπτικοακουστικά τοπία και να τα διαμορφώσει τόσο ηχητικά όσο και οπτικά. Οι έξι οπτικοακουστικές συνθέσεις προβάλουν διάφορα τοπία με δικούς τους νόμους και συνθήκες δίνοντας συγκεκριμένες επιλογές στον χρήστη/εκτελεστή. Με ένα μοναδικό σύστημα πλοήγησης ο χρήστης μπορεί να εξερευνήσει αυτά τα ηχητικά τοπία και να ανακαλυψει νέες εκδοχές σε κάθε ένα από αυτά.

The installation and performance of the specific piece took place in the main concert hall of SARC, which is one of the best hall for sonic art in Europe. It includes 64 speakers in 360 degrees surround formation. For this project to work 7 iMac computers were used connected in parallel, and 4 projectors with total resolution 4800 x 3072 pixels. The Cube is an interaction system of audiovisual material that it is controlled from a wireless controller. This controller can "intrude" inside the audiovisual landscape and alter it accordingly. Six audiovisual compositions are available, and each one projects different worlds with different interactive rules, giving the opportunity to the user to explore them.

Ακόμα, το σύστημα αποτελείται από ένα διαδικτυακό τόπο που μπορούν οι θεατές/ακροατές να επισκέπτονται και να μεταφέρουν τις δικές τους σκέψεις και εκδοχές για το συγκεκριμένο έργο. Τα σχόλια "ηχοποιούνται" αυτομάτως από ένα δεύτερο σύστημα και παρεμβάλονται στο προθάλαμο της εγκατάστασης. Το τελικό αποτέλεσμα λοιπόν, είναι μια σύνθετη εκδοχή της ψηφιακής τέχνης στο τομέα new media interactive installations. Το project έχει δημοσιευτεί και ως επιστημονικό άρθρο στο συνέδριο Sound and Music Computing 2007, Λευκάδα.

Moreover, the system is comprised from a network space that the users can visit and enter their own ideas and versions of this specific work. The comments they make are "sonified" - converted to sound from a robotic voice - and they are played in the lobby of the installation. The final result is a complex version of digital art and belongs to the genre of new media interactive installations. The project has been published as a scientific article in the Sound and Music Computing Conference in Lefkada, 2007.

Sonic Plasma Sphere

Η συγκεκριμένη εφαρμογή αφορά τη μεταμόρφωση μιας συνηθισμένης σφαίρας πλάσματος (εφεύρεση Nicola Tesla) σε διαδραστικό χειριστήριο για ήχο και εικόνα. Τα οπτικά φαινόμενα που δημιουργούνται στο εσωτερικό της σφαίρας αναλύονται από ένα σύστημα μηχανικής όρασης και στη συνέχεια μετατρέπονται σε εντολές ηχητικής σύνθεσης. Έτσι, η συγκεκριμένη συσκευή γίνεται ένα πρωτοποριακό synthesizer για εφαρμογές σύνθεσης και εκτέλεσης μουσικής και ηχητικής τέχνης.

In this application a normal plasma sphere was transformed into an interactive controller for audio and visual material. The optical phenomena that are created when the sphere is touched, they are analyzed from a computer vision system and following that they control methods of sound synthesis. Thus, the specific device it becomes an innovative synthesizer for live performance of music sonic art.

Άλλες λειτουργίες του συστήματος είναι μια μονάδα φωνητικής αναγνώρισης για τον έλεγχο των περαμέτρων της ηχητικής σύνθεσης, όπως επίσης και μια μονάδα οπτικής σχεδίασης βάσει των ενεργειών του χρήστη. Το παρόν χειριστήριο έχει εφαρμοστεί για εκτελέσεις ηλεκτρο-ακουστικών κομματιών, αλλά και για πιο εμπορικές εφαρμογές (π.χ. DJing and live mixing).

Other functions that are installed in the system include a voice recognition unit for the control parameters of the sound synthesis, as also a unit for visual generation according to the user input. The controller has been applied for electro-acoustic performance, but also for commercial applications as well (for example DJing and live mixing).

Hyper-Djembe

In this project I transformed a traditional percussion instrument into an embedded hyper-instrument for live sequencing, editing and performance. Sensors and micro-controllers are used in combination with the instrument in order to make it communicate to the digital world, and enable functions to it that are unimaginable to do otherwise. These sensors include an arduino board, an accelerometer, two infra-reds, two touch pads, four buttons, and an ultrasonic sensor. The sensors communicate with the computer and they are extracted as digital information inside a software application that I have developed for this project. The combination between the instrument, the sensors and the software gives the user the opportunity to create in real time infinite sound patterns and colors, which can simultaneously be processed with a variety of audio effects, as also as to be recorded in a single audio file for further processing.

Surround Mixing and Aesthetic Considerations

This is a study concerning the aesthetic consideration an engineer has to understand in order to correctly mix audio in surround configuration.

"...One must pay close attention to the distribution and organization of the sounds towards the spatial trajectory, and also adjust the balance of the mix evenly across the sound spectrum. If regions of frequencies are boosted between instruments, then signal processing such as compression and equalization must occur to fix the fault interpolations. The design of a third dimension is an important aspect as it might help to bring an additional depth to the mix. This can be done with the use of reverberation algorithms or other time delay effects. The mix should be close and tight, and no sound artifacts (noises, effects) placed arbitrarily in the spatial image should draw the listener's attention, unless it is something desired. Another important aspect to the surround mixing process is to mix-dow in all the available audio formats (stereo, mono) and reprocess it, mainly because phase cancellations could occur that may affect the mix negatively, presenting an unwanted result..."

Measuring Binaural Masking Phenomena Using Phase and Filter Differences

This part includes a research and an experiment I did concerning the analysis of a physiological phenomenon called binaural masking level difference, and its implications in digital sound synthesis and spatialization. For the experiment I developed a software measurement tool, which it is shown in a following picture.

"...The detection of the complex tones in noise were improved when phase or filter differences were applied to the masked frequencies. Binaural masking level differences were found larger at lower frequencies when phase differences were applied. This proves the fast that the hearing system is more sensitive to interaural time disparities. At some cases the auditory mechanism fails to recognize the masked signal because the masker causes neural activity to that region of the basilar membrane and by reaching the threshold limit, the auditory mechanism finds it hard to make a coherent sense. The addition of phase or filter differences, exceed the triggering level or neural impulses and force them to provide dissimilar information, which makes the brain reformulate the acoustical event internally and recognize the sound again. This process has been basically developed for the understanding of the localization cues of the spatial trajectory...".

Techniques and Methods of Binaural Audio

"The topic of this research is focused on binaural audio; a spatialization technique that is used to record and reproduce the sound material in a three dimensional space. The origin of binaural audio comes from the ability of the human binaural hearing to "identify the location of a sound source mainly by detecting the phase (or time) difference between the arrivals of a pressure wave at the two ears " (Tristam 1992). In order to locate the sounds in space, the human brain needs to receive information from the auditory mechanism and to compare the results so as to get the directional characteristics of the sound source...".

Artificial Intelligence Systems for the Automatic Composition of Music

This is the topic of my dissertation for the title BSc in Music Technology (Audio Systems) from London Metropolitan University.

"The purpose of this study is to describe, analyze and evaluate advanced computational systems that are used for musical purposes, and more specifically for partial or complete automation in various levels of composition. These systems have been designed from computer and cognitive science in order to find new ways for the reach of optimum solutions, which in this case should mean the finding of alternative methods for the construction of musical material. The strategies that are presented include automata, stochastic and deterministic processes, fractal and chaos algorithms, formal grammars, neural networks, expert systems, and genetic algorithms. The analysis of the systems includes their philosophy, architecture, and applications in musical contexts. The importance of this analysis is vastly needed in order to evaluate the reasons of their existence, and observe ways and methods for implementations that may be of the highest significance inside the sphere of music".

In 1998 I started my studies in sound engineering in one of the best private colleges in Greece, I.I.E.K. AKMI. In this two-year course I had my first connection with subjects such as audio theory, acoustics, public address installation, mix theory, studio production, and many more. The recording studios are state of the art, and the teaching staff is well-educated with a lot of practical experience.
